Public houses are very much a part of life in this part of the world, and Elmet has some jewels. Read on........

In Aberford: 7 miles north of Castleford on the old Roman road.

The Swan - a 15th century place - much modified and famous, locally, for it's excellent food.

The Arabian Horse - so called for the first of that ilk coming into the area stayed here on their way north. Just a good pub.

In Ledsham: Between the A1 and Kippax 4 miles from Castleford.

The Chequers - so called after the place where business was done and accounts settled. Good simple food and a wonderful beamed building from the 15/16th century. Closed Sundays.

Good food - no - GREAT food - and a wonderful collection of jugs and miner's lamps hang from the beams. Good people both sides of the bar.

Wonderful atmosphere.  This is THE pub in the area - okay, I'm bias, it's my local!! But it really is the centre of the area in more ways than one.

The Boot & Shoe: In the village itself.

A typical local pub. Nice clientele and friendly owners.

Barwick-in-Elmet: 6 miles east of Leeds centre.

Gascoigne Arms. Typical pub of the area - next to the Maypole.

New Inn: Despite it's name; an old building - classic old pub. That's Classic with a capital 'C'.

Saxton: 4 miles south of Tadcaster.

The Greyhound.  Classic ancient village pub. Right next door to the graveyard! In fact the graves are half way up one wall!

Crooked Billet: On the main Tadcaster to Wakefield road. Actually in the now-vanished village of Lead. Famous for it's giant Yorkshire puddings. Gets it's name from Warwick's badge and carries his coat-of-arms outside. Legend has it that said Earl stayed at this place before the nearby battle of Towton in 1461. Well - who are we to disagree!!

Sherburn-in-Elmet: 8 miles south of Tadcaster.

Okay - so I'm getting around to it !!!!

Stutton:

Towton: 2 miles south of Tadcaster.

Rockingham Arms. Advertises 'probably the best fish and chips in the country'.

Bardsey: Just west of Leeds to Wetherby road.

Bingley Arms. Oldest pub in the county - or even the country !!! Starting in the 900's AD !
